This month, I really am left wondering “Now what?!!” I don’t think I can ever remember a time that has been so unpredictable for me and Fincision. More on that as the month unfolds (maybe!), but in the meantime, you can find the usual monthly personal drivel if you Continue reading »

I’m really pleased to welcome Matt Davies to the funny ol’ world that is Fincision. We’ve worked together over the last five years on various assignments, so making Matt a Fincisioneer is a natural progression.
Matt will get around to contributing a few articles once he’s done with managing me on our latest project!
Watch out for more additions to the Fincision team soon…

Back in April 2007, I wrote a post on stochastic forecasting that’s proven to be one of the most visited pages on Fincision. Within the post, I mentioned that I had a set of questions to ask model providers, and that they were available on request, but now I’m pleased to make the PDF available as a general download:

I’m presenting at the Dealers Group’s “Wrap Users& Smart Technology 2008″ conferences over the next week or so. Been to Bradford already, and looking forward to London on Thursday, and Glasgow next Monday.
This public speaking thing is a new adventure for me, and all comments (positive and/or negative) are welcome - just leave a reply to this post…
So far, I’ve been asked if I’m actually Harry Hill (during my presentation in Bradford; my thanks go to that particular wag - it was a good icebreaker!), and suffered the curse of the mobile phone interruption! I wonder what the remaining two gigs have in store for me…
I’ll post my slide deck & script when all of the conferences are over.

A new wrap platform called “Novia”, built on InfoComp’s technology, made a bit of a splash in the trade press when it broke cover recently; the name means “new way”, apparently.
Unfortunately, for a proposition that will be delivered primarily via the internet, it’s online presence at launch is very much in keeping with the “old way”; don’t these guys get any of this interwebs thingy?
Suppose you are interested in finding out a bit more about Novia (like I was); what to do? Let’s go and have a look around cyberspace by starting with the name, Novia, and the obvious urls… Continue reading »

It was time for a makeover. I’d been thinking about it for weeks, but last night I finally just went and did it. Bye-bye Dark Theme, it’s been emotional; instead say hello to Resurrection, Fincision’s summer tanktop.
After that flurry of wordpress activity, it’s time for a break! The office closes at 2pm today, and the Linskey family will be soaking up the rays in The Algarve from tea-time tomorrow, if BMI Baby gets it’s act together.
Back on Friday 29th May…

This month, I have mostly been looking forward to going back to The Algarve for a week’s holiday. May’s been a funny old month, with some big decisions going my way at last (but I still feel like George), and I’ve even found the time to write a couple of half-decent posts, but now I’m counting down the sleeps (Noah – who by his own admission is ‘a big 4′ - doesn’t understand the concept of days yet, so everything in our house is measured in sleeps at the moment) to when the Linskey family finally climbs onto the plane and jets off to the sunshine! For the rest of my May personals, Continue reading »

Last year’s post on stochastic forecasting tools generated quite a bit of commentary both online and off and, as conversation, not content, is now king (thank you, cluetrain), I’m going to attempt to start another round of debate by writing about the current state of the adviser financial planning tools market!
DISCLAIMER: Fincision is actively involved in evaluating suppliers of planning tools for clients, and in some instances, designing award-winning user interfaces and functionality for these tools. So there.
There have been a few tremors in the adviser financial planning tools market over last 12 months, although much of the seismic activity has appeared below the waterline. For me, the demise of decisionsdecisions, the Barrie & Hibbert subsidiary that provides the model powering offerings from Scottish Widows, Prudential and Winterthur amongst others, was disappointing, whilst the rapid rise of Prestwood’s Truth was both unexpected and refreshing. And, of course, there’s been plenty of interesting activity from the other players, too! Continue reading »

I signed up as a delegate to FT Global Event’s forthcoming Wrap Showcase a while ago, but realised last week that I had too much work on and couldn’t justify attending. As if by magic, a young lady from FT phoned me and asked if I was still going to turn up, so I took the opportunity to gracefully back out. All good so far…
…and then yesterday this guy from FT phones me up and asks me to reconsider, as this is the super-duperest wrap gig ever and I’m a no-brained sheep-botherer if I don’t turn up. After I politely declined again, he then pushed for names & contact details of others within my organisation who might like to take my place, particularly as this event is gonna be so absolutely vital to my business. I though about nominating Noah, but he’s got school, Ocean’s only got eyes for Dora the Explorer these days, and Helen has to stay at home and clean the house like all good wives should (I’ll pay for that later…)
OK, we all gotta job to do, and his is getting bums on seats to keep the sponsors happy, but I kinda felt he went to far, but still nothing to get too upset about…
…until 9:30 this morning when the same teletard is back on the phone trotting out the same nonsense as if we’ve never spoken before. Don’t you just hate that? Hey dumbass, which bit of NO don’t you get? And if you’re really at the “cutting edge of business practice” like your website says, why can’t you just update your outbound call list like competent teletards do?
FT Global Events: sort yourselves out! You’re just annoying me now…
